To honor and express their gratitude to the Sto.Nino, the Cebuanos hold an annual celebration every third Sunday of January. This celebration is called “Sinulog” in commemoration of the clamor made by Ulog’s friends after the first miracle – “Si Ulog, si Ulog!”
The lavish festivities include the offering of a “sinulog” dance which is depicts the battle between the Saracens and the Christians, with the Sto.Nino as the little warrior leading the Christian defenders and eventually defeating and converting their opponents. There is also a winding procession participated by devotees carrying images of the Sto. Nino.
Today, the “Sinulog” of Cebu has become one of the city’s tourist attraction with an added Mardi Gras parade along the city streets for one whole day. The week long celebration is something that Cebuanos look out for. Right after the holidays, the “Sinulog” festival is the most awaited time for those who have experienced the festivities.
